10th January 2006 // Eoin Murray European Alfa Romeo Champion

Eoin Murray has become one of the most successful Irish drivers on the International Circuit where at aged 23 he has won the prestigious European Alfa Romeo Championship.

Eoin took 9 podium finishes from 11 races, 3 lap records, 4 pole positions, and 5 fastest laps on his way to lifting the title. The European Alfa Romeo championship is run over 11 rounds across the most testing tracks in Europe Monza, Valencia, Magny Cours, Oschersleben, Spa & Imola using the 220 BHP Alfa Romeo 147. Some of the top European drivers compete in the championship with drivers from Italy, Portugal, Spain, Holland & Ireland competing in the series.

Eoin, who is twice winner of the Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of the Year award, which carries a prize fund of €32K, is quick to point out the support of Motorsport Ireland and The Irish Sports Council in his success but singles out the decision by Alfa Romeo Ireland to support him by providing his championship winning Alfa Romeo 147 for the past two seasons as key to his success.

As prize for winning the Championship Eoin was presented with a fully prepared €250K Alfa Romeo 156 World Touring Car. He now faces his biggest task ever to secure the funding necessary to compete with this car in the 2006 World Touring Car Series.

Eoin also won the Irish Rallycross Stock Hatch Championship this year. ‘’It has been an excellent year for me especially in winning the European Alfa Romeo Championship but I am also proud of winning the Rallycross Stock Hatch Championship and I must express a very warm ‘thank you’ to all my sponsors and my supporters who stuck with me throughout the campaign.’’

Apart from the contribution by Alfa Romeo Ireland a big pat on the back goes to Eoin’s other sponsors Holfeld F1 Components, Gary Aaron Homes, Carnegie Sand & Gravel & Bill Griffin Motors without whom we would not have a European Champion.
