3rd August 2009 // Murray wins in Portugal

A fantastic weekend saw Eoin Murray claim another victory and second position in the Seat Supercopa championship at the new circuit at Portimão in the Algarve.

Murray qualified in 2nd position for race 1 of the three race format. A fantastic start saw the former European champion take the lead at the first corner and open up a comfortable lead setting the fastest lap of the race in the process. Race 2 is immediately after race 1 with no interval period between races. Eoin started in pole position but a cautious start saw him drop to third place on the opening lap. A manoeuvre on lap 3 saw Murray pass Oscar Nogues and move up to second position. Eoin crossed the finish line in second place and just .6 of a second behind the winner Massimiliano Pedala.

Race 3 is a reverse grid format, determined by the top 6 finishing positions of race 2. Eoin would start from 5th place for the Sunday morning race. A collision on lap 7 resulted in a broken suspension and Eoin had to retire his car. Despite failing to score any points in race 3 Eoin closed the 14 point gap to the championship leader down to 12 points. Eoin is now lying, a close 4th position in the championship table at the midway stage in the season.

Murray commented “Of course I am disappointed with the DNF in race 3 but overall I am very happy with our speed throughout the weekend. We showed we have been consistently fast at the past two events and now I hope we can continue this form at the next event. My team Oasis Motorsport are doing a great job and we are getting stronger with every event.”

Eoin’s next race is 12th/13th of September at Albacete in Spain.
